The Tunneller is a creature type in Dungeon Keeper.

For information about the Dwarf hero units of Dungeon Keeper 2, see Dwarf.
Note also that 'Tunneller' is the in-game and old British spelling of this word.

General Information

Tunnellers are very poor fighters, worse than their cousins and any other hero, especially in the very early levels of the game. However, they are excellent diggers and are responsible for spearheading most hero invasions. They are the first hero that usually enters a dungeon through a Hero Gate. If there is no gate available, they will enter your realm by digging into the earth. Tunnellers appear to be Dwarves, easily indicated by their size and appearance

Tunnellers act as trailblazers for other heroes to help them navigate their way around the realm. They dig through the earth creating a path to find a breach in a dungeon's walls. Once they dig a direct path leading to your dungeon, other heroes will follow that path.

In the early stages of the game they are very weak and can be easily killed by weaker creatures, such as flies and beetles. As events unfold towards the end levels, though, they attack your dungeon early, and become a lot tougher to kill. Some are even as high as level ten and have  teleport ability, making their work at digging much faster.

Converted Tunnellers fall somewhere between an Imp and a normal creature, helping out with jobs such as digging, reinforcing, carrying unconscious enemies etc. (albeit slower than an Imp would) but still needing to eat and rest. Despite the fact that Tunnellers do not possess the Dig creature spell, they can still work like Imps, but they cannot dig whilst possessed. They are incredibly lazy (unlike when they're employed by heroes) and often do the bare minimum in terms of digging before going to rest, as well as often refusing other tasks completely. Unlike Imps, they need lair space, food, and pay, making them much more problematic in terms of maintenance. If captured, it would be more beneficial to let them rot into Skeletons, or use their corpses to generate Vampires.

Tunnellers do not appear in Dungeon Keeper 2 and are replaced by the Dwarf.
