- Not to be confused with Haste Creature.
Speed (DK1) or Haste Self (DK2) is a creature spell in Dungeon Keeper, Dungeon Keeper 2, and Dungeon Keeper Online.
General Information (Dungeon Keeper)[]
"This speeds up the creature you are controlling so that it can perform fighting and working tasks really quickly. Acts the same as the Speed Creature spell." |
— Dungeon Keeper Manual |
Speed is one of the most useful Creature Spells, increasing a Creature's movement speed, attack speed, and performance rate on tasks. Its effect is similar to the Keeper's Speed Monster spell, except it is maintained by the Creature (who throws it as needed whenever not idle), and costs no gold.
Regarding the increase to task performance, Speed doubles the Creature's Training, Research, Manufacturing, Scavenging, and Praying Skill. Better yet, there is no increase in the quantity of gold it costs to Scavenge and Train.
The Dungeon Keeper Goodies Disc contains wave files of Mentor dialogue that were cut from the game, one of which mentioning an 'Accelerator' spell being available.[3] This is presumably either this spell, the Speed Monster Keeper spell, or an early version of one of them.
Level 10 Bug[]
In the original version of the game, when a level 9 creature throws Speed, its duration is as expected, lasting almost a full minute, but for a level 10 creature, the spell only lasts a few seconds and cannot be maintained full-time anymore. In such cases, a level 9 creature with access to this spell is almost invariably better than its level 10 counterpart.
What is happening is that when a level 10 creature casts a spell, the game tries to cast the spell charged to level 10. However, spells only have 9 levels and as such the engine reads the wrong entry in the master ruleset file CREATURE.TXT, located in Dungeon Keeper's \DATA\ subdirectory. A quick-and-dirty fix is to go to line 69 (MAGIC_PROTECT) of the file and change the first value on the line, 100, to something greater than 550. This is a dirty fix, because it changes the lowest, "uncharged" casting cost of the Keeper Spell Protect Monster. This also only fixes it for the Speed spell and leaves other spells that have the same problem, like Heal and Armour, unchanged. It may make sense to adjust the value in the "Power 0" column further along, to increase the duration of the uncharged spell to match the increased cost. This bug is fixed in KeeperFX.
General Information (Dungeon Keeper 2)[]
"Available only to experienced Imps, Haste Self increases the overall speed of the caster.
Note: Your Imps cast this automatically. An Imp so blessed has blue-green streaks behind him." |
