  • Hi, I am into DK2, heart and soul, and I am, very slowly (it is a hobby), developing a board game prototype inspired by it. Vaguely like Descent the board game. I wrote 530 pages of gameplay specifications, sometimes not politically correct (fart, babies, easter egg hunt, evil quests). I am a little bit overwhelmed and need help. I invented so many things I thought were missing or could be improved. I tested it in my basement with my kids and it works. But I need another point of view, from people loving the video game as much as I did. If you dreamt some features were present or some creatures had different powers, new traps, tunneling science, eviltower, dungeon resources, tech tree, rare earth, discovering the ceiling-less Sunland, etc. If you can think it, it can be implemented.

  • I am glad to be present on this wiki. I have been playing Dungeon Keeper for years and have even visited this wiki many times over the years. But as of late, I have noticed errors on pages so it was only right that I got busy like an Imp here (a pleasure to be working here, by the way. I like how small the community is). I hope to be decently active. I primarily work on the Quake and Thief wikis, but hopefully I may serve this wiki just as well.

  • Greetings; I was thinking about rewriting a few things - Hero/Creature descriptions - so everything conforms better with everything else (if that's ok), but noticed one particular oddity. From the front page, The 'Creature' Category page doubles as its own article page ...which pointedly also has a lot of info about the Heroes. However, the 'Heroes' category is practically blank with a seperate dedicated article page - Heroes. Any particular reason for this inconsistency? - could you possibly merge the Heroes article with its own category page?

    • Hi, I wrote a huge tract on the creature category page because it receives more traffic than any other page. I think this is because Content/navigation section on the homepage links to it. I borrowed some words from the short and not-very-informative Creatures article and turned that article into a redirect.

You can make any structural changes you want of course. You do not actually need admin privileges to merge pages together and making redirects. I suggest making sure the pages with the most/best content be most easily accessible from the front page.

        Loading editor
    • Excuse me, but could you teach me how to make redirect pages? I do not know how to and there are three pages in mind that would be great for redirecting. Here they are:

      Dragons (redirect to) Dragon

      Trolls (redirect to) Troll

DK2 (redirect to) Dungeon Keeper 2

    • Sure, when you edit a page, click on the dropdown bar, and go on "classic editor". After that, click on the "Source" tab, and then the "more" button with the plus on it, then click on the one that says #REDIRECT [[]], or just copy that into the source view of the page, putting the page in between the double square brackets :)

    • You have my thanks, fellow Keeper. I see that you are the Keeper in charge of this wiki. You are very resourceful and helpful. On many of the wikis I work on the admins ignore me when I am trying to be helpful, so I thank you once again for tolerating me. The Quake wiki guys are great for example. The main admin there is actually my best friend.

  • So what the hell happened?! Who sent a copyrite notice to this backwater? :D

    • I'm still waiting for the email, but apparently another fansite sent a claim because some of our articles are plagiarising (which is probably my fault). Once I find out what site it is and thus what parts of the articles are plagiarising, I'll rewrite them so they no longer cause a problem. It's about time I actually bothered doing things again ;)

    • Ah, I figured out who it was, and I feel really bad because their site is amazing! When I have the free time I'll start rewriting the pages.

  • Hi, Spatulade. You are doing amazing things for this wiki, thank you for that. I want to ask you: Where can I get the raw dump of DK1 images, that you uploaded to sendspace? That file is no longer available, and I would like to use it. Thank you!

      Loading editor
    • I used a program called DKTools to rip them all, if I remember correctly. I can't seem to find it online, so I have uploaded the version I have to my Mediafire account. The program is written in French, but it's not too difficult to figure out what means what. It allows you to rip not only the sprites from the game, but also the sound effects, tiles and text files from the game. Other people have made some of the sprites into animations, and they might be somewhere on the internet still if not on the Resources part of How You Can Help. If you're still having problems, I can upload what I have as well, but what I have is not complete, and I'd much rather upload the program that allows you to do rip them than upload a few gigabytes of images.

      Hope this helps!

    • Hi! First, I have to say that my connection is very slow, and I can only access to it once in a whole week, and for just one hour. Because of that, I have not tested DKTools, but I wanted to say Thanks. Have a nice day!

  • I started putting up some information on basic DK1 maps. This was listed as an obvious priority in How You Can Help but I am kind of ambivalent. I think I would rather see esoterics first but I guess pages like this are meat. Also I thought it would be polite to ask you before making a lot of templates but I never got around to and just made the templates. Sorry :(

It panned out that I made a template for every dk1 creature and room individually, but then there is Template:Trap and Template:Door and Template:Spell that switch.

I mulled over how to use your Level infobox because I ran into problems thinking about how to do it when there are multiple keepers with different profiles. All that information has strategic relevance so I made a Template:Faction thing to see if that can make things precise while still being dense, and an infobox.

Anyway I wanted advice on that and to ask you what should be changed because, well, these are a lot of new templates, formatting these pages is really weird and hard to do in a uniform manner, and you are the admin.

Something else I thought about, if we want somthing clean and easy to replace the absolute mess which is Template:Faction, you might want to request the Variables extension from wikia...

    • Before I get started in replying to your message, I just want to thank you and congratulate you on all you have done so far and the hard work you have put in.

First off, thanks for looking at the How You Can Help page, I think you're probably the first to do so, besides myself. You don't have to follow it strictly, and you can feel free to change or re-order it as you see fit, I don't mind. Secondly, you don't have to apologise for the templates you've made, they are wonderful and definitely better than anything I know how to make. I think they are a very good idea and a good basis for anything else in the future. If you want to fiddle around and see what works best for the level pages then you can, but the work you've done so far is both concise and incredibly helpful, probably some of the best work on this wiki.

As for the templates, the layouts do look quite weird, but I feel this is a combination of my lack of knowledge and the layout of wikia pages. If you want to fiddle around, feel free. If you want to change, rewrite, combine etc. any templates, have a go, but perhaps try making new templates first before drastically changing old ones. The templates I have made are held together with duct tape and wishes, so if you know how to make better, stabler and more user-friendly templates, go for it. There's also a Sandbox if you want to fiddle around with code.

If you really don't like your Faction template, or think you can vastly improve upon it, I can do so. Another thing is, if you ever need any more access for whatever reason, I can always bump you up to a higher position.

Seriously, thank you for what you've done so far!

P.S. This is going to make me sound like a noob, but how have you gotten such detailed animations for the minimaps for each of the levels? I never could think of a good way of doing it. Is it using an external program such as the official editor to show the revealed map and everyone in their starting positions, or is it something else? How do you get the animations? Do you record it using a program and then convert that to a .gif, or do you use another way?

P.P.S. If you need any resources, such as sounds or images, for example, let me know. I can also (try to) make any custom images you may require.

P.P.P.S. Do you think it would be a good idea to have different versions of the map for each level (starting view to avoid spoilers and fully-revealed), or do you think this is too much work or simply pointless? I mean, it is a fifteen-year old game, so I doubt spoilers are going to be much a problem.

    • Awesome I'm glad you approve. For now I guess the best thing is just to adopt a "prudence" approach on the level pages recognizing that the levels are too different to be uniform. Like trying to capture Secret 1 and a 3-Keeper-free-for-all in the same infobox and written sections would be like lumping plants with rocks.

As to getting another extension, the main thing used in templates is ParserFunctions - {{#if:}} etc. - (listed in Special:Version) but there is a quick contact form somewhere around here and you can ask for other extensions, Variables being a rather powerful one if we wanted to try it out. As far as i know they don't ask any awkward questions, but since I really don't know if we need it or not... meh.

P.S. Well if you are willing to sound like a noob then I will go ahead and sound like an OCD. Your eversmile gif inspired me to work out whether there was a way to get the rooms animated. I set every creature's speed to 0 so they would hold still. I ran DK in dosbox, set the cycles down to about 0.5 fps, and ran a script to throw window screencaps into photoshop. By capturing 32 frames instead of 4, I thought I got a pretty good loop (the actual perfect cycle might be really high, like 128 or 256 frames, don't know).

P.P.S. Excellent. I can't get anything of that sort! One I can think of right off, could you extract the "ripple" animation for the magic door and temple?

P.P.P.S. Nah. People visit pages and guides to get the dope. The one case where I would consider not using the fully-animated revealed map is level 19.

      File:DK1_MAP00019.gif

But then I'm thinking, triggering seizures in small children is totally in the spirit of Dungeon Keeper.

    • That's true, I'll leave it up to you to do what you think best then.

As for requesting the Variables extension, I'll ask the Community Central wiki at some point, as it sounds quite fun to play with.

P.S. That is a genius way of doing it, changing creature speeds to zero never even crossed my mind! It's also funny to hear that there may not be a better way to do it than taking lots of screenshots quickly! I know Keeper FX can record video, but I haven't experimented with that particularly much, and it probably isn't as clever as yours!

P.P.S. I have rips of most of the game stuff, for example all the textures and sprites, with the exception of creatures, which I have as animations instead. (I didn't really want a folder with 2000 images in it on my computer). I also have the ability to rip sounds from both games if you require those as well. Some of them should be under the "Resources" section of How You Can Help. As for the animation you requested:

      Templewibble

I hope it's good enough, It looks about the right speed.

P.P.P.S. You're right, not much point in doing that is there? Besides, kids love flashing lights, keep it in!

  • Is it just me or does it look like all page content is getting scaled to 90% size somewhere. I noticed this when making the research chart (Library), and some cell borders are failing to appear. Then it's also evident in your great animated gif of the Eversmile map, which is supposed to be 340px wide and crystal clear, but it's .9*340 = 325px wide and kind of blurry.

I took a look at the CSS http://dungeonkeeper.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Wikia.css and there's not much there. Nothing about scaling that I can see.

Any thoughts? I really like the font the way it is but things other than text seem to have a limp.

      Loading editor
    • Hmm, my first guess would be that you may have the page zoomed out on your browser, so maybe try CTRL+mousewheel until the pictures look crisp, or reset it in the settings. I'm using Firefox and that has the ability to adjust the size of the font only while leaving the images the same. If it's not that, then I'm afraid I'm not sure what it could be, and I suggest that peraps you ask over at the Wikia central or somewhere else.

Sorry I can't be of much assistance, but I hope this helps.

    • Thanks. I thought about that and I probably do have it zoomed out 1 level and just didn't realize (firefox also). I haven't changed the zoom level in months, since before I even came to the site. A bit strange.

  • Hi,

I've been searching the web for some good GIANT images and icons. I'm in the process of writing some image processing software that I have called "GIAnT" and I need a good logo image. Are these images/icons available for free or license? If license, what is the cost?

Thanks! Doug (email is Dr dot Doug at yahoo dot com)

  • During the version of Crusade that features you having to rescue the Black Knights, Apparently, one can find Knud the Elite Troll in a Workshop on the south of the map. Do you think this is true, and could this mean the other Elite Creatures are hidden in Levels?
