The Fly is a creature in Dungeon Keeper. It is the weakest creature, apart from the Imp, but useful for early scouting or as sacrificial fodder.

General Information[]

"It can spit corrosive vomit at your enemies and its wings grant the hideous insect the speed to intercept the most nimble trespasser."
In game description
"This bog-standard giant insect is the first creature you get. Fast, but flimsy, flies are a push-over for the stronger invaders into your Dungeon. They hate Spiders and fight them if forced to share the same Lair. Despite this, they are excellent explorers and reveal more of the map to you by flying over water and lava."
— Dungeon Keeper Manual

Flies are your first creature, and your fastest. They are great scouts, but weak fighters, barely stronger than Imps. As one of the three bugs along with Beetles and Spiders, Flies are a key component for sacrifice recipes in the Temple, and this is in fact the only real use they have in maps with stronger creatures and opponents (basically any map where you have access to a Temple).

Inquisitive by nature, a Fly's default AI task is exploration, a job whereby the creature moves endlessly around the map seeking unrevealed territory and doors (which the Fly will try to bash down). The task will eventually send the Fly into a scrap with roving Imps or enemy Flies. This can provoke full-scale attacks, so keep an eye on them. Flies are almost as notorious for this as Hellhounds (who actually seek enemies, rather than just explore) are.

Flies are natural enemies to Spiders, and the two species will fight whenever one party catches sight of the other while within a Lair. As Flies are pathetically weak, the Spider will almost always win, though.

Flies are not annoyed by slapping, starvation, torture, or going unpaid. They also have double the anger threshold of other creatures (except the Imp and Floating Spirit): equivalent to 800 creatures leaving at once (which is impossible, as there can only be up to 255 creatures on the map at a time). Therefore, it is very difficult to vex a Fly. Nevertheless, between their tendency to explore their way into trouble, or be an annoying corpse in the middle of your Lair, Flies are often more of a hassle than their meagre fighting skills are worth.

In Possess Creature mode, the player's view is distorted due to their compound eyes.

Trivia[]

  • Contrary to what Eversmile tells you when you first attract a Fly (see above quotation), they cannot spit corrosive vomit at enemies, or at anyone or anything else; there is no such ability in the game.
