Easter Eggs

The name 'Easter egg' is a reference to Easter egg hunts.

This is a list of Easter eggs in the Dungeon Keeper series. An Easter egg in a video game is a hidden and undocumented message, asset, or feature.

Dungeon Keeper[]

Devmessage

hold SHIFT then type "FECKOFF"

  • While in game hold ⇧ Shift and type "FECKOFF". This will display a hidden message from Simon Carter to bounce around the screen and the sound of an Alarm Trap can be heard for the duration the ⇧ Shift key is held. In KeeperFX, from the C onwards, a sound of switching Control Panel pages signals a correct character entry for this Easter Egg.
  • SKEKSIS

The text that displays when the SKEKSIS easter egg is activated.

While in game hold ⇧ Shift and type "SKEKSIS". This will display a hidden message from Dene Carter, and the Mentor (who, incidentally, was voiced by him) will say "YOUR PANTS ARE DEFINITELY TOO TIGHT". Unlike the SKEKSIS and CROW (see below) Easter Eggs, there is no indication that you're correctly entering a secret code here.
  • Plug your printer in while playing Dungeon Keeper. If you are at level 5 (Lushmeadow-on-Down) or above, you will receive a fax from the in game rival Keeper.
    • This feature appears to not have made it into the retail release. There are still references to the PRINT command in the script of some levels[1], but these do not do anything. These also imply it was the Avatar, not the rival Keeper, sending the messages.
    • An interview [Citation needed] says this command was removed because it scared beta testers. This command seems to be present in the 28 May 1997 build; however, whether or how it works is unknown.
    • An interview with Simon Carter[2] sheds some more light:
"We had a feature where, if you were playing late at night and were connected to a printer, the invading hero would randomly spam it with threatening messages along the lines of "I'm coming to get you, you evil despot." Conceptually rather fun, but in practice a little distracting in an office environment. One night during testing, EA's printers started going mental across the world, with some people in the US thinking they were getting death threats."
— Simon Carter
  • Start the game with the command line -alex, then while playing, hold down both ⇧ Shift keys and type JLW. The sound of researching will play when each letter is pressed and the message "Alex, hopefully lying on a beach with Jo, says Hi" will bounce around the screen.
  • Sacrificing more than 16 Chickens into the Temple and hovering over the Chicken spell will replace the normal text with a rather long message from Jonty Barnes[3].
  • Sacrifice exactly 4 piles of gold and exactly 4 Imps. Now for every 16 Chickens you sacrifice, you'll get a Spider from the Portal, even if there are no Spiders in the Creature Pool. This Spider has a random level. This Easter Egg does not work if you already have 4 or more Spiders. It seems that this needs to be done deliberately; if you rush it, the game may not register all your sacrifices and this Easter Egg may not work for the rest of the level. It's probably best to wait until the Mentor has confirmed each sacrifice before doing the next one. This appears not to have made it into the retail release, but is revived in KeeperFX. On the 21 May 1997 build, the recipe is slightly different: you get a Spider for every Chicken you sacrifice from the tenth onwards, and there doesn't appear to be a limit on the number of Spiders you can get. On the 28 May build, you get a Spider from the eighteenth Chicken onwards, and again there seems to be no limit.
Full Moon level landview Dungeon Keeper

Full Moon level (flag with a circle)

  • On full moons, a secret level appears on the level map.
  • Once in a while, there is a very slim chance that the Mentor will say something funny.
  • You can press ⎇ Alt+F1 to F8 to send taunts to enemy Keepers (the same ones they send you). In later versions of KeeperFX, the ⎇ Alt is changed to ^ Ctrl.
  • Birthday message Dungeon Keeper

Dene Carter's birthday message, as seen on December 1st.

A birthday message will display on certain developers' birthdays:

KeeperFX[]

  • On new moons, a Bullfrog-themed cinematic plays before the intro (the menu resolution must be at least 640x480).
  • In addition to the above birthdays, KeeperFX has the following ones:
  • 25 May - Tomasz Lis
  • 29 November - Michael Chateauneuf

Official level editor[]

Dungeon Keeper Editor Easter Egg
  • Run the program with the -mark parameter, and hold left ⇧ Shift and type "CROW". The strings "It's not hell, but you can see it from here." and "Hello from Mark to all who know him!" should float around the screen,[4] along with Graveyard bell toll sounds playing. Research sparkling sounds signal a correct character entry for this Easter Egg. This Easter Egg was discovered by QUFB on The Cutting Room Floor (TCRF).

Dungeon Keeper 2[]

Dance Easter Egg Dungeon Keeper 2
  • At exactly 12:58am on a Saturday, every creature will stop whatever they were doing and dance to Disco Inferno for two minutes. The Mentor says: 'Let's party like it's 1999!'. Even if you're on the menus, the music still plays.
  • On new moons, a secret level (Imp Invasion) appears at the top-right of the campaign level select screen.
  • If you have text files of languages other than the one the game was installed in, you can put them in subdirectories whose name is the language in English in the Data\Text subdirectory of the game directory. Running the game with the -language <name> parameter (where <name> is the language name) will make the game use these files instead of the default ones. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to readily switch between audio languages, only text.
